10+1 experiment

Together with a team of curators, we set out to bring the themes and questions of the 1972 exhibition "Hungarian Design (10 Experiments)," initiated by Mihály Pohárnok as a problem statement, into the present day. The 1970s exhibition focused on functionalism, system-based design, manufacturability, and addressing social needs, and was followed by a months-long debate in the professional press. Nearly fifty years after the original exhibition, Hungarian design is once again featured at the Fészek Gallery under the title Hungarian Design – 10+1 Experiments (Kovács-Vass, 2021).

When installing the exhibition, functionalism and simplicity were also important considerations. With minimal financial support, we had to create an exhibition where the past and the present could coexist. In the tight exhibition space of the Fészek Gallery, the biggest challenge was separating the different sections and guiding the visitors' paths. A suspended drywall wall marks the strip reminiscent of the 1972 exhibition across from the entrance, while the contemporary objects were displayed on simple wooden-framed stands. A key criterion in designing the installation was ensuring it could be assembled quickly and easily.
